Valley of Mellons

The Valley of Melons (or Wadi al-Batikha) has got its name from the unusually shaped stones that are found here, resembling Egyptian watermelons. The Valley of Melons actually consists of three separate wadis of which the third one is the most accessible. The Lower Eocene stones have been formed by wind erosion and polished to a shine by blasting sand. The shifting temperatures have split some of them in half (CISS Inventory 2010; Vivian 1990).
